NEPAL
New Delhi. After the Nepal government banned several social media platforms, angry youth entered the Nepal Parliament on Monday while protesting in several cities across the country including the capital Kathmandu Valley. The protesters broke through police barricades and scaled the gates and stormed the federal parliament complex at New Baneshwor. The protesters had earlier vowed to maintain peace, but the police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse them. The situation then spiraled out of control.
It is noteworthy that on September 4, Prime Minister KP Oli's government banned 26 social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Reddit and X.
Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli warned the youth about their protests and said that they should know the price they have to pay for protests.According to the Nepali newspaper The Himalayan, the Nepal government has said that the ban on social media will be lifted only when companies like Facebook and YouTube open their offices in Nepal.
The Oli government says that companies providing social media services should come to Nepal and get registered and prepare a system to prevent fraud and irregularities. It is worth noting that till now only TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, Vitak and Popo Live have registered in the Company Registrar Office in Nepal.
